About the charity

Last year, 247 people received care from Weldmar Hospicecare in Bridport, West Bay, Lyme Regis, and the surrounding area, and more than 1,500 in total across Dorset.

This includes those adults who have a life limiting illness, and their loved ones. Weldmar Community Nurses are experienced in the complexities that such illnesses bring, and visit patients at home to offer specialist advice and care and discuss the best way forward.

In the last few weeks and days of life, Weldmar’s hospice at home service will help fulfill the wishes of those who want to stay in the comfort and familiar surroundings of their own home. Their Inpatient Unit in Dorchester is also there for patients who need more sustained care around the clock.

It’s not just about clinical care from doctors, nurses, and carers. Weldmar’s compassionate approach treats every person as an individual, and their team includes therapists, counsellors, social workers and more, who are there every step of the way.

Did you know?

All of Weldmar’s care is provided for free.

Only 22% of funding comes from the NHS. Weldmar needs to raise £26,000 every single day to keep their services going, through the support of the local community.

Stampede by the Sea offers an opportunity for Weldmar Hospicecare to highlight the ways that they support people facing a life limiting illness, as well as raising vital funds through the partnership and sponsorship opportunities, and the sales of the sculptures at the auction to close the trail.

There’s more to Weldmar Hospicecare than you think

There are a number of myths and misconceptions about the care provided by Weldmar. For instance, although the hospice itself (our Inpatient Unit) plays an absolutely vital role, most of the care that we provide takes place in communities across Dorset, in the comfort of people’s own homes.

It’s also not just cancer, but adults with a wide range of life limiting illnesses will fall under Weldmar’s care. This includes conditions such as heart disease or neurological illnesses including Motor Neurone Disease.

As well as doctors and nurses, Weldmar’s team includes counsellors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, wellbeing support workers, social workers, complementary therapists, and more – all on hand to guide the people in their care through life’s most difficult journey.
