‘Elephants never forget’ – as we never forget those that we have loved and lost. But sometimes we don’t notice other things we have lost; the wildlife, flora and fauna around us. The Indian elephant is classed as an endangered species – more than half of its population has disappeared. Beffalump is a tribute to those that have gone. She has a kindly, loving side of her face – but the other side is wary, watchful, and waiting to see how we’re going to try to save her. Her Indian decoration reflects how the Hindu elephant-headed ‘Ganesha’ is revered, loved and respected as the deity of beginnings, wisdom and luck. Can we give her brothers and sisters a new beginning by using our wisdom to good effect in order to change their future – or is the population going to continue to dwindle? It is up to all of us to care enough and not just leave it to luck.
